July 09 2008 Breeders' Cup Challenge ScheduleThe Breeders' Cup Challenge series is highlighted by its 'Win and You're In' provision, with the winner of each of the Challenge races automatically qualifying for the corresponding divisional race in the two-day, fourteen-race, $25 million Breeders' Cup World Championships, to be held October 24 and 25 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Here is the schedule of BC Challenge races.
June 25 Rick Dutrow Facing 15-day Suspension Rick Dutrow, trainer Big
Brown, is facing a 15-day suspension after Salute the Count tested positive for double the legal limit of the approved medication after running second in the Grade III Aegon Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs. Clenbuterol is often used by humans who suffer from asthma. John Veitch, chief steward of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority said
use of the drug in horses has grown because it can increase lung
capacity. It is considered a Class B drug. Though use of the drug is
legal under Kentucky racing guidelines, it cannot be administered 72
hours before a race. Dutrow waived his right to a hearing but plans to file a written appeal, which he must do within the next 10 days. There's no timetable on when Dutrow's appeal will be heard, Veitch said. Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAH Stables which owns Big Brown, called Dutrow’s latest violation “a disappointment”. IEAH issued a release on Monday saying it would adopt a drug-free policy with the exception of Lasix for all its horses effective Oct. 1. Dutrow has been plagued by violations throughout his career, having been fined or suspended every year since 2000. June 06 Belmont Day weather - Hot! Saturday's temperatures may climb into the low 90s, and some horses can't handle heat, especially over 12 grueling furlongs. John Lee, director of communications and media relations for the New York Racing Association, said the track is prepared. "Hot weather on Belmont Stakes day is no surprise to us, and in general we're very ramped up on that front for a crowd of 90,000 or so," Lee said yesterday. "It's a major part of our planning, and we have additional EMTs and extra first-aid stations throughout the building." Like humans, horses perspire in sultry weather, and their sweat often looks like shaving cream on their necks and between their legs. Although sweating is normal, handicappers avoid betting horses dripping with perspiration, which saps their energy and makes them perform below par. You should consider heat when you do your Belmont Stakes betting this year. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and hot. The high temperature is expected to hit 89. "I can't imagine [heat] being a factor; none whatsoever," Dutrow, a Big Brown trainer said yesterday. "Not for our horse. I don't know about the other horses." June 05 Horse Handicappers Belmont PicksHere are several horse racing experts' 2008 Belmont Stakes picks. I thought it would be good for you to read how experts are predicting the Belmont, before you place your Belmont bets. Macho Again, Casino Drive and Big Brown are Dave Tuley's picks. 1. MACHO AGAIN: Finished second to BIG BROWN in the Preakness, even though he never really threatened the winner. He gains the services of top jockey Garrett Gomez who is still without a Classic victory. At 20-1 on the morning line, MACHO AGAIN should definitely outrun his odds and I give him a better-than-average chance of pulling the upset if he becomes the first to challenge BIG BROWN eye to eye down the stretch. 2. CASINO DRIVE: Hailed as the one most likely to spoil BIG BROWN's Triple Crown bid. After winning his maiden race in Japan, he came over here and won over the Belmont track, which is a good sign. Downgraded him a little as his connections have avoided working him on the wet surface earlier this week, so he might need a fast track. 3. BIG BROWN: The class of the field, but he's still trying to overcome many obstacles, including hoof problems, and trying to win three races over five weeks against horses fresher than he. If he pulls off the feat, he deserves every accolade. Big Brown, Denis of Cork, and Casino Drive are Steve Davidowitz' picks. 1. BIG BROWN: A strong colt with multiple gears, dominated the Derby and Preakness. Yet much training skill was needed to get him through a cracked hoof for this 12-furlong race. Earned benefit of doubt with good workout on Tuesday. 2. DENIS OF CORK: Third in the Derby despite missing some important preparation. Strong Churchill workouts for this; upset threat. 3. CASINO DRIVE: Peter Pan win in just his second career start was better than all but very few horses that Big Brown already has beaten. June 04 2008 Belmont Stakes FieldThe 2008 Belmont Stakes post positions have been drawn and the Belmont field has been set.
